Her current mediums include acrylic, oil pastel, and French dyes on silk. Her working studio is in Scottsdale, Arizona where she also facilitates sessions on “Art, Courage & Creativity” for adults exploring art, often for the first time. In her own words: “I use painting to explore and express; it’s where I lose myself, but find my way. In a world that grows more complex by the minute, I yearn for simplicity and clarity; the way light falls upon a decaying leaf, or leans against an abstract symbol. I am deeply attracted to color, texture, shapes and forms which become vehicles for integrating experience with perception.” An emerging artist and primarily self-taught, Ms. Leeds won the 2003 “Undiscovered Artist” competition sponsored by the Scottsdale Gallery Association and Tribune which resulted in her first solo gallery show. Since that time she has been included in several juried exhibitions and her studio was included on the prestigious 2006 Working Artist Studio Tour sponsored by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA). Karen has patrons throughout the United States and Canada, and her work can viewed by appointment in Scottsdale, or anytime at Christopher Morgan Galleries in Palm Desert, CA. Karen’s work was included in a group exhibition in Kansas City (Robert Frasier’s Gallery of Contemporary Art) in April & May 2008, part of a citywide celebration of contemporary women in the arts. Karen writes ..... Dear AZ Artist Guild members, I am honored to be sharing demonstrations with you during your meeting scheduled October 27th. While my presentation will cover oil pastel technique, as well as silk painting techniques, the slant will be on the creative process itself. With that in mind, I would love to share with you the following YouTube video if you haven’t already seen this: http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/229 BACKGROUND Harvard based Neuro-anatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few would wish for: One morning, at the age of 37, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one -- speech, movement, time and comprehension (all left hemisphere) -- she studied every moment as the brain scientist that she was. This is a powerful story about how our brains define and connect us to reality and to one another. This remarkable video clip speaks to the role our right hemisphere can play in the world and certainly in our art. If you haven’t already seen this, I urge you to take a few minutes and check it out before our meeting. It is remarkable. Jill is an entertaining speaker and the clip is funny, inspiring and relevant. The subject will very much support my presentation to you. Until we meet
Kind regards, Karen
November 24, 2008: Michael Brady Demonstrator![]() Michael writes....I am a native Phoenician and sill living in the "Valley of the Sun" where I also do my art. My art education comes primarily from the street. The fascination with the visual has been an overwhelming curiosity within me for as long as I can remember. I am a juried member of the Desert Artists, and I am the first digital artist to be juried in for the Arizona Art Alliance. I am also a juried member of the Arizona Art Guild and the Sonoran Art League where I am also unique in my work. I paint, draw, and construct my images using a computer. The computer is my canvas, my sketch pad and darkroom. The computer houses the tools that I use to create my art. I paint concepts, actions, and movements usually accompanied with an anecdote. "Drops of Time" are what I call my images. My work is considered distinctive by most, I am one of the few artists that do what I do. Not only is my methodology cutting edge for a fine artist, but my subject matter is unique in it point of view and delivery.
